Caladesi Island State Park

Making its return to the list after an 8-year hiatus (it was No. 1 in 2008), Caladesi Island State Park is described by Dr. Beach as a “white beach composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters.” He says that his favorite trails here are traversed not on foot but by kayak or canoe “through the mangroves to see the large blue herons and other birds that frequent this wonderful natural area.”
