Monument Valley, Utah, was not in our original road trip plans. It was too far south, and not really “on the way” to any of the stops we were making. But then I found out you could take hot air balloon flights over the valley. We had to rethink our plans. Some posts on this site contain affiliate links, meaning if you book or buy something through one of these links, I may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you!). Read the full disclosure policy here.We woke up before the sun rose on Day 7 to make the 45-minute drive from the Valley of the Gods to the Monument Valley tribal park. The valley is located on Navajo lands, which is the only thing that prevents it from being named a National Park.
The Loire is best explored by car, but day-long driving can sometimes take its toll. Arblaster & Clarke, in partnership with Historical Trips, addresses this concern by arranging everything for you. A seven-day tour includes visits to Loire châteaux and vineyards in Sancerre and Chablis, with the chance to sample sancerre, muscadet and vouvray. Led by Dr Michael Jones, a medieval historian, the itinerary also offers plenty of historical insights and includes a day in Honfleur, the former stomping ground of many Impressionist painters, including Monet. The Loire Châteaux: Wine and History tour departs September 4 and costs from £2,345 per person including return coach travel from London and all meals.

Hot air balloons are commonly used in Egypt to provide tourists with an aerial view of the country’s landscape and famous landmarks. In Luxor, such rides offer views of the Nile River, the temple of Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings, among other attractions.Concerns over passenger safety have been raised from time to time, with multiple crashes reported in 2007, 2008 and 2009.In April 2009, 16 people were hurt when a balloon crashed during a tour of Luxor. After the crash, flights were grounded for six months while safety measures were improved. Pilot training was increased and balloons were given a designated landing zone.Following the toppling of Hosni Mubarak in 2011, the rule of law has largely been ignored.
Sky Cruise, the operator of the balloon, had suffered a previous accident in October 2011 The company has stated that it is properly insured and prepared to compensate victims’ families.
The best game-viewing areas in the Serengeti are the short-grass plains and their granite kopjes in the south, the Seronera Valley, the Western Corridor and the far north of the park where it meets the Mara. New since last year is Namiri Plains a small luxury camp 90 minutes’ drive east of Seronera. This area was closed for 20 years to create a cheetah haven until it opened last year and is offbeat Serengeti at its very best.
Our own cave was more elegant but with much the same view. It looked out over a huge swathe of Cappadocia; a swirling landscape the colour of oatmeal and peaches; gorges full of pinnacles like clusters of spears; the distant cone of Mount Erciyes, lightly powdered in snow.
This being a fable, the pinnacles were known as “fairy chimneys” and every morning the sky was full of hot-air balloons (it’s a long-established tradition for visitors to drift over Cappadocia in a balloon).
While the shepherdess enjoyed all this with her sheep, we watched in Ottoman splendour. Our cave had been transformed. Only Lucy (our five-year old) had a bed in the rock. The rest of our suite erupted grandly out of the ground. One room was like a parliament for sultans. There were alcoves, silks, a magnificent bed, seating for 20 viziers and an acre of Persian rugs. We even had a giant sultan’s bathtub, with a view across the steppes.

A hot air balloon is a lighter than air aircraft consisting of a bag, called an envelope, which contains heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or wicker basket (in some long-distance or high-altitude balloons, a capsule), which carries passengers and (usually) a source of heat, in most cases an open flame. The heated air inside the envelope makes it buoyant since it has a lower density than the colder air outside the envelope. As with all aircraft, hot air balloons cannot fly beyond the atmosphere. Unlike gas balloons, the envelope does not have to be sealed at the bottom, since the air near the bottom of the envelope is at the same pressure as the surrounding air. In modern sport balloons the envelope is generally made from nylon fabric and the inlet of the balloon (closest to the burner flame) is made from a fire resistant material such as Nomex. Modern balloons have been made in all kinds of shapes, such as rocket ships and the shapes of various commercial products, though the traditional shape is used for most non-commercial, and many commercial, applications.
